The Kentucky Derby / Mordecai 25

I can't imagine anything repeating, much less enduring, one hundred thirty five times; and yet, here we are, about to witness the hundred thirty fifth running of the Kentucky Derby.

Friends, Romans, Pilgrims, and Fleas, I bid you all a good day, no matter which time zone you are in. May we all be winners today!

If you are a layman, there is not much advice I can give you about the Derby, except to go out and buy the Daily Racing Form. After you have correctly figured out how to read the charts, you can then try to make an informed decision based upon past performances. For me, this years crop are all very close, although, I Want Revenge and Pioneer Of The Nile, would seem to be the top contenders. Don't kid yourself, though; Most of the rest of the field is capable of that one “supreme” race. For this race, I always seek advice from my thoroughbred Guru, Jersey Frank. This is a guy who has watched horses for better than 60 years. Not only does he watch the horses, but he's got an eye on the trainers and their methods. He, furthermore, looks at the horses bloodline. Enough said! Here's what Jersey Frank has to say: I Want Revenge is the winner, no question! Based upon the horses outing in the Wood Memorial, in New York, and the roughness of that race, this horse should be the cream rising to the top.

As for myself, I believe there is such a thing called “racing luck”. Since this is a “cowboy race”, with horses bunched at the start and bumping each other at that first turn, it is my belief that the jockey who can keep his horse out of trouble wins the race. I will “wheel” 4 horses with each other to make various trifectas. I Want Revenge, Pioneer Of The Nile, and my 2 long shots, Chocolate Candy (Mike Smith up), and finally, General Quarters. If we can catch 3 of these in the “Tri Box", it should make for a good day's pay. Good luck to all on your bets, and have a “cold one” for me.

Have to run now. Grandma is having trouble accessing the Daily Racing Form on the inter net, although her mind is already made up. She is listening to Jersey Frank and putting her money on I Want Revenge. Woe is me if the horse doesn't win.
