The 20th century marked the development of the city of Las Vegas. The construction of Hoover Dam in 1928 attracted thousands of workers to the area. According to British author Deborah Cadbury, Hoover dam is one among the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World. In 1931, gambling was legalized in Las Vegas. On January 27, 1951, the first atomic test code named “Able” was demonstrated at Indian Springs, an air base about 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The luxurious El Rancho Vegas resort was inaugurated in 1941 followed by Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel’s Flamingo Hotel in 1946.
Adventurous activities like rock climbing, dayhiking and backpacking, skiing, and mountain biking can be done in and around the city of Las Vegas. With every hotel and casino having a club or lounge, nightlife is Las Vegas is never hard to find.
