Texas Hold-Em Poker is fairly simple to learn, but can take a lifetime to master. Here are the basics you must learn before putting down your first bet in the game. At the beginning of the hand, you will be dealt 2 cards face down, these are your personal cards. This is the base for your hand and will give you a glimpse of possible combinations in your hand. Then 5 cards, called community cards that will be dealt with the faced up for all to see them. The objective of the game is to get the best 5 cards in a higher winning sequence. After each round of cards are distributed around the table a betting sequence will follow from the first person to receive a card to the last one dealt a card, usually on the dealers left.
You can either “call” the bet, or “raise” the bet by raising the amount of money in the pot to remain in the game. If for some reason no one has raised or called the hand, the dealer will ask the last person if they want to “check” the hand. If he checks the hand, that is the end of the betting and 3 cards are dealt by the dealer to the middle of the table face up again for everyone to see.
These 3 cards are the “flop.” Another round of betting will continue. After the betting, the dealer will flip one card face up onto the pile in the middle of the table. This card is referred to as the “turn.” After another round of betting, the dealer issues the last card, called the “river.” Then another round of betting will continue around the table. After that the “showdown” starts. In this sequence, you either bet or fold your cards until there is one clear winner at the table. This is the part of the game that will take the most time to master. Once you feel more secure betting and playing a game, you will increase your knowledge and enjoyment of the game.
